Report: Most Brands Remain Unprofitable Despite TikTok Shop’s Boom
The report says TikTok Shop sales are growing rapidly, but transactions are highly concentrated and most brands still face sales and profitability pressure.
What are the key facts?
- 1Large number of registered shops in the U.S.
- 2Top 1% of sellers account for most sales
- 3Many small and midsize shops face zero sales
- 4Beauty and FMCG categories perform strongly
What happened?
Inc. reported, citing data from media and industry research organizations, that TikTok Shop’s overall gross merchandise value continues to grow and that the number of registered shops in the platform’s U.S. market has reached a substantial scale. At the same time, sales performance varies significantly among shops, and the platform’s growth has not translated into profit growth for all brands.
The report said TikTok Shop sales are highly concentrated among leading sellers, with the top 1% accounting for most sales. A considerable number of small and midsize shops have completed registration but still face a lack of transactions or prolonged periods without sales, resulting in significant differences in operating performance among brands.
By category, beauty and fast-moving consumer goods account for relatively concentrated sales activity on the platform. The report also noted that an expanding overall platform scale does not mean newly onboarded brands will receive stable orders. Shops differ significantly in content operations, influencer partnerships and product conversion performance.
What does this mean for cross-border sellers?
TikTok Shop’s growth does not mean new shops will automatically make money; traffic and conversions are concentrating among brands with strong content and influencer capabilities. Listing products, waiting for organic traffic or treating sales as profit can expose sellers to high returns, commissions and zero-sales risk. Highest-priority action: Select one hero product this week, calculate its true gross margin and run a small-scale content and influencer conversion test.
