What happened?
Amazon will adjust its commercial liability insurance requirements from November 2, 2026. Previously, some sellers generally had to submit commercial liability insurance after their monthly sales exceeded $10,000. Under the new rule, this sales threshold will be removed for product categories subject to enhanced safety listing requirements. Stores selling regulated or high-risk products such as children’s products, cosmetics, ingestible products, and lithium battery products may therefore be required to hold commercial general liability insurance even when monthly sales are below $10,000, with coverage of $1 million per occurrence and $1 million in aggregate. Sellers in mainland China will generally also need to purchase insurance through Amazon Insurance Accelerator unless they obtain a written exemption from Amazon. Those likely to be most affected include sellers testing new products with low sales, sellers using broad product listings, and cross-border sellers of battery or beauty and health products. In addition, insurance certificates may be rejected if the company name, additional insured, deductible, or policy period does not meet Amazon’s requirements.
What does this mean for cross-border sellers?
Stores selling high-risk products such as children’s products, cosmetics, ingestible products, and lithium battery products may need commercial general liability insurance even when monthly sales are below $10,000. Sellers in mainland China should also pay close attention to the required purchase channel and the company name, additional insured, deductible, and policy period shown on the certificate.
What should sellers do now?
- 1This week, review listings for children’s products, cosmetics, ingestible products, and lithium battery products store by store; flag those with monthly sales below $10,000; prepare a list of products requiring insurance; and verify whether enhanced safety listing requirements apply.Listing character checker
- 2This week, verify insurance certificates for affected stores by checking the company name, additional insured, deductible, policy period, and the $1 million per-occurrence and aggregate coverage amounts, and confirm that the policy information is complete.
