TikTok Shop Clarifies Smart Promotion Fees: U.S. Campaign Sellers Must Include Marketing Costs
TikTok Shop U.S. Smart Promotion charges 3.5% outside campaign periods and may rise to 4.5% or 5.5% during campaigns, mainly affecting sellers participating in platform campaigns.
What are the key facts?
- 13.5% marketing fee based on store GMV outside campaign periods
- 2Campaign rates may increase by 1 to 2 percentage points
- 3Primarily affects U.S. sellers participating in multiple platform campaigns
What happened?
TikTok Shop U.S. published an explanation of Smart Promotion, under which the platform charges a fixed marketing fee based on store GMV. The base rate outside campaign periods is 3.5%. During campaign periods, the platform adds 1 to 2 percentage points, so the rate may reach 4.5% or 5.5%, with the final rate determined by the platform’s campaign arrangements.
The platform said it will provide discount resources worth no less than the rate paid by sellers and may support participating stores through coupons, product subsidies, traffic tags, and cashback. It also disclosed that more than 60% of participating sellers achieved GMV growth of over 20%, but this figure reflects overall performance and does not represent the actual returns of any individual store.
The rule mainly covers U.S. sellers participating in platform-wide promotions, Flash Sale, Premium Offers, Weekly Campaign, and brand campaigns. Sellers need to include marketing costs of 3.5% to 5.5% in product gross-margin calculations and distinguish platform subsidies from costs actually borne by sellers.
What does this mean for cross-border sellers?
U.S. sellers participating in major promotions, Flash Sale, Premium Offers, Weekly Campaign, and brand campaigns must include Smart Promotion marketing fees of 3.5% to 5.5% in gross-margin calculations. Platform discount resources, coupons, and product subsidies are not the same as costs actually borne by sellers and must be accounted for separately.
What should sellers do now?
- 1This week, export the products and store GMV involved in U.S. campaigns, recalculate margins using 3.5% outside campaigns and 4.5% or 5.5% during campaigns, prepare a listing-level profit table, and flag products with insufficient margins.Profit calculator
