TikTok Shop Strengthens Disclosure Requirements for AI-Generated Product Content
TikTok Shop allows sellers to use AI-generated content but requires disclosure of material AI generation or modification. It prohibits fabricated product information and unauthorized AI endorsements.
What are the key facts?
- 1Content generated entirely by AI or materially modified by AI must be actively disclosed
- 2AI must not fabricate key product attributes or actual effects
- 3The platform permits certain AI processing that does not change factual product information
- 4Violations may lead to content removal, account penalties, or intellectual property disputes
What happened?
TikTok Shop has strengthened its disclosure and authenticity requirements for AI-generated product content. The platform allows sellers to use AI to generate or edit images, videos, scripts, translations, and voiceovers, but content generated entirely by AI or materially modified by AI must be actively disclosed. AI must not fabricate a product’s size, color, material, quantity, bundle contents, compatibility, safety attributes, or actual effects. It also must not create unauthorized endorsements through digital avatars, synthetic voices, or third-party likenesses. Background replacement, image-quality enhancement, subtitle translation, and visual-style processing are permitted when they do not change factual product information. Simply enabling an AI content label does not automatically result in reduced distribution, but false disclosures, concealing material modifications, or creating exaggerated before-and-after comparisons may lead to content removal, account penalties, or intellectual property disputes.
What does this mean for cross-border sellers?
TikTok Shop allows sellers to use AI to create product materials, but content generated entirely by AI or materially modified by AI must be actively disclosed. Sellers must also prevent AI from altering factual information such as size, material, or effects, and must not use unauthorized digital avatars, synthetic voices, or third-party likenesses, or they may face content removal, account penalties, or intellectual property disputes.
What should sellers do now?
- 1This week, audit AI images, videos, and main-image assets in the TikTok Shop store. Mark each item generated entirely by AI or materially modified by AI, and create a disclosure-label-to-asset mapping list.AI Photo Tagging
- 2Review the size, color, material, quantity, bundle contents, compatibility, safety attributes, and actual effects stated in key listings. Remove AI claims that cannot be supported by product information and produce an itemized inspection record.Listing character checker
- 3Check digital avatars, synthetic voices, and third-party likenesses in short videos and livestream materials to confirm that no unauthorized endorsements are present. Replace anomalous assets or archive authorization records, and retain the review results.
